You’re on site, trying to track down a builder at short notice because your last one has disappeared; you’ve got a task list that’s getting longer and longer; between sweeping up behind trades and unloading 342 tonnes of tiles out the boot of your car, you’re trying to decide between carpet samples and paint colours; and no matter how much time you spend on site, the finish line doesn’t seem to be getting any closer…
And the only reason I know, is because a few years ago that was me. Trying to run 3 projects at the same time, ending up ‘on the tools’ out of sheer frustration at contractors letting me down, I was drained.
At least I didn’t need a gym membership, but whilst my mind was trying to think about how to build our portfolio, raise finance for our next deal, and plan a weekend away for me and Victoria, my body was stuck on site, sometimes for 12 hours a day.
I thought being busy meant I was doing the right things, but I was just spinning plates and it wasn’t sustainable.
Running a project is very different from successful project management. And I was certainly running (fast, in a million directions!), but I wouldn’t call our projects a success.

And there was nothing worse than getting to the end of it all, and still being disappointed with the quality.
The only way I learned how to step away was by leaving the country. We sold our home a couple of years ago and bought a boat to sail the world, but I didn’t want our business to stop.
That was the wake-up call I needed. I dug out my project management textbooks from my life as an IT Project Manager, and realised that things didn’t need to be this difficult.
We started building out systems, analysing the bottlenecks, and looking at each project as a project, instead of just showing up every day and hoping for the best.
And would you believe it, things started to improve!
We now regularly have 5 to 10 projects on the go at any point in time. And they require less time and cause less stress collectively than a single project used to when I was in plate-spinning mode.
So after years of continuing to review and refine how we work, I want to share with you our Project Management Mastery framework.
